The Meaning of Kung Fu

The words “kung fu” are of Chinese origin and are best translated as “hard work over an extended period of time”. It actually has a much broader meaning than self defense. The true meaning of kung fu lies in the achievement of excellence in any facet of life.

The Kung Fu Academy believes kung fu can be used to teach the valuable lesson that by working hard at school day after day a child will have the optimum chance at living a full and rich adult life. When a child learns that he or she will be rewarded for exerting an effort they will be learning a valuable lesson that will stay with them for the rest of their life.

Building a Solid Foundation for Life

In order to build a solid foundation for life the Kung Fu Academy bases all teaching on the following three principles:

• Challenge - We provide the student a challenge. We want each student to continually stretch themselves to reach beyond present capabilities.
• Achievement - Along with the challenge we provide the student with the means and encouragement to rise up to the challenge.
• Satisfaction - Having been presented a challenge and then overcoming it, the student will enjoy the satisfaction inherent with accomplishment.

The Kung Fu Academy believes that this cycle of challenge, achievement and satisfaction will teach lessons to the student that will result in Building a Solid Foundation for Life. This cycle is part and parcel of every area of life in today's society. Life is full of challenges at school, at home, with friends, and later career development and raising a family. We want to ingrain in each student the value of meeting each challenge until the desired end is achieved. The satisfaction gained is reward enough in itself to encourage rising up to meet the next challenge. In this way the student is taught to never give up.

The Kung Fu Academy believes that kung fu is a valuable tool in shaping one's life. Success at any one thing serves to breed success in everything else. We are grateful for the chance to help each student succeed at kung fu, and ultimately at life itself.
